A very special season which included an Region 7AAAA Championship and nine straight wins came to an end just like it started. The proud Catamounts led 19-15 with 41 seconds left and couldn't hang on in the first round of the GHSA playoffs going down to the Region 5AAAA Cherokee Warriors 21-19.
The Warriors used a very good ground game to take an early 7-0 lead and keep the ball away from the Cats offense. Dalton responded on Harrison Scott's one yard run with 1:30 left in the first half to pull within one, 7-6. The Catamounts opened up the second half driving 75 yards in 5:10 to go ahead 12-7. The TD was another Scott one yard run. This lead held up briefly until the Warrior running back took a hand off and went up the middle for a 60 yard go ahead TD. The Warriors again led 15-12.
The Cats weren't dead just yet. They went on a 80 yard drive which included great runs by Scott, Cameron Hudson and Shaquon Moore as well as a 23 yard pass from WR Carter Crutchfield to QB Scott. Kareem Hawkins also had a big reception. This drive was culminated by a 11 yard TD run by Moore putting the Cats up 19-15 with 48 seconds left.
Then.....it happened. The Cats Jose Hurtado executed a perfect corner kick and the returner was tackled at the Warrior 15 yardline with 41 seconds left in the game. 85 yards and 41 seconds left. The Warriors had completed one pass the entire game before this possession and weren't even close on the other attempts. One short pass completion, one incompletion, one ball thrown up down the middle of the field for a 40 yard gain, two more incompletions (one just avoiding a sack by Jalen Fields) and an underthrown pass down the Dalton sideline for a 30 yard gain to the Dalton six setup the final play of the season.
With six seconds left their running back took a pitch to the right on what was an attempted halfback pass. Both of his intended receivers were covered very well by the Cat secondary. He tucked the ball and ran diving into the endzone for a touchdown as the final buzzer sounded. Ballgame...season over.
Cameron Hudson finished the game with 100 rushing yards. Scott was 8-11 passing for 112 yards and Carter Crutchfield was 1-1 passing for 24 yards. Kareem Hawkins and Caleb Taylor each made big catches for the Catamounts. Henry Meyers and Garren Palmer had fumble recoveries for the Cats.
